Are You Smarter than a Politician? |

Have you ever noticed how politicians seem to ignore business basics both during the campaign and after they are elected? During most campaigns, it is common for a politician to knock their opponent instead of talking about WHY they are the best person for the job. How long do you think you’d keep your current customers if you were constantly bad mouthing your local competitor? Think about this for a minute. Every time you knock your competitor, you are bringing up their business name which gives them free advertising and you are making your customer curious. This curiosity is the desire to know if that business is as bad as you say and, more importantly, they’ll be wondering what you aren’t telling them about your business. Your job is to clearly define your business and how it is unique for your customers. You may do this with educational seminars, tips, great customer service, non business related acts of recognition (birthday cards, Christmas cards, etc.) that indirectly keep your business name in front of your customer and maybe ideas on ways they can save money or improve the quality of their life.
It seems like politicians go into fund raising and re-election mode almost immediately after taking the oath of office. The campaign promises and benefiting the people they represent often seems secondary to their careers. How long do you think your business would survive if you focused solely on your needs instead of theirs?
Every business that wishes to make a profit must think about how their product or service benefits the consumer, how to convincingly tell the customer they need your product or service and how you are the best provider for that product or service.
Smart business people do everything they can to be unique, provide value to their customers and make their business memorable in a good way to the customers. Politicians, on the other hand, knock their opponents, focus on their careers and seem to do the minimum necessary to stay in office.
Are you going to run your business like a smart business person or take the chance of doing a crash and burn like a lot of wanna be politicians? |
