A Different Way to Think About Your Business and Marketing
I was listening to a recorded tele-seminar this week and the marketers being interviewed talked about different pieces of the marketing puzzle. This got me to thinking.
I’ve mentioned before that you need clearly defined goals, a business plan, a plan of action and daily activity schedule to reach your goals. These business tools are necessary and very useful but they are also boring and hard for beginners to wrap their minds around.
Try using the following ideas instead of the traditional terminology:
Puzzles are multiple odd shaped pieces that when assembled correctly create a clear and easily recognizable picture. The money you earn in your business is energy that’s used to turn your dream into your reality. Your dream is the face of your marketing puzzle. Find or create a picture of your dream, if you don’t already have one and use this image to constantly remind yourself why you are working.
Everything you do in your marketing campaign is a puzzle piece that may or may not be appropriate for this puzzle at a given point in time. Some of these puzzle pieces are:
- Sales brochures
- Business cards
- Classified ads
- Safelist Advertising
- Press Releases
- Paid advertising such as the Viral Solo Ad Network
- Social Bookmarking sites
- Social Networking sites
- Traffic Exchanges
- Card Deck Advertising
- Television Advertising
A puzzle’s outer edges are usually pretty easy to find and put in place without having the picture of the end result in front of you to guide your actions. Some of the above marketing pieces are easy to implement and your dream doesn’t need to be visualized to start them but their effectiveness may not be that good.
Each piece of your marketing puzzle needs to be tested for its effectiveness and how well it works in bringing your dream to fruition.
Automatic traffic exchanges are easy to set up but they are very poor at selling. This tool might be useful for almost passively capturing leads if you have a compelling free offer that grabs attention in 5 seconds. You must determine whether this is worth the effort and fits your big picture by testing.
Classified ads are another area that you can test online before spending any money on offline use of the ad.
You don’t always have to create new ads for different venues. An ad that is short enough to be a classified ad can be used and tested in safelists, used and tested in ezine advertising, used and tested as a signature in a forum and may even work on a web page for traffic exchanges. By using the same effective ad in different venues, you can test its effectiveness in each venue and leverage your time to add additional marketing pieces to your puzzle because you aren’t constantly writing new ads.
Keep the vision of why you are in business and marketing where you can visualize it and the tedium of marketing and building your business will be more fun.
