Our local newspaper had an article today (November 21, 2014) titled Alternative to Big Box Stores that was a perfect example on how a local hardware store has not only survived but thrived against the giant home improvement stores that are also located in town.
Their answer is to listen to customers explain their problem even when the explanation is convoluted and sometimes unclear then they help them find the answer.
When you and your employees know your product or service and are willing to go out of your way to help your customers find the solutions that they need for their problems, you are doing something that most of the low and moderately waged employees of the big box stores are either unable or unwilling to do.
Actions like those are what lead to some great word-of-mouth advertising for you and poor advertising for the big box stores.
I’ve mentioned before the great customer service is part of what you have to have in place to create a 5 star reputation culture within your business.

If you put the proper systems in place, you can consistently collect 4 and 5 star reviews from your happy customers then use them to market your business both online and off-line.

Where you market your business is important and having a 5 star reputation within your community and permission to use that in your marketing is just as important because those two elements when combined with a quality product or service is how you successfully compete with big box stores.
