Lack of Knowledge about Marketing Online Can Adversely Affect Your Business
There are many things that can affect your business both online and off-line. Some of the things that you need to know online to avoid pitfalls are:
What Hosting Platform To Use
The hosting platform is the foundation on which you build your website and it’s important that you choose a quality host and then put the right type of site on it to build the presence that you want now and in the future.
In most cases, the hosting companies that you see advertising on television or on race cars are not going to be the best choice for you and your business.
These companies have slick advertising and they do have systems in place that allow you to put a nice looking site up with minimal knowledge but that site may cost you business in the long run because:
- it may not be mobile friendly
- it may be difficult to make search engine friendly
- it may be difficult to update once built
- it may not be as secure from hackers as it should be
- there may not be any way to back it up
- there may not be a way that you can easily add features to the site as your business needs change
- it may be impossible to move your site to a different host once you’ve outgrown your first choice
Some of the inexpensive hosts overload their servers or use outdated hardware so that your site may not load as quickly as it needs to, especially on mobile devices.
Other hosts are so proprietary that you can only use the features that are available when you get your hosting plan and this severely limits your flexibility and growth potential.
What Type Of Site To Put Up
The type of site you put up and the platform that you use to build your website on may depend upon the goals for your website. Some of the different types of website platform uses are:
- business card
- lead generation
or a combination of one or more of the above.
There are a number of e-commerce platforms out there that let you build sites and I had a customer consult me this week on one that he had built and I had to inform him that the site was not mobile friendly or search engine friendly.
When I made him aware of the fact that Google announced that having a mobile friendly website was going to be included as a ranking factor as of April 21, 2015 and that about 50% of all searches are from mobile devices, his jaw dropped.

Since he’s a DIYer that using skills that he gained working with a mainframe several years ago, he was caught off guard with all of the changes that have happened in search within the last year.
Another thing that his website and many other small business websites lack is all of the appropriate policies that need to be in place to provide protection in case the legal issue arises.
He had some legal policies in place that were created for him by a friend instead of by an experienced Internet attorney and he did not know that the FTC views any policies that you have on your website as a contact that can be used against you in a court of law.
The FTC has very broad powers to protect the consumer and if you do business within the United States the country in which you reside or have your website does not matter and it does not matter if you are incorporated or a sole proprietorship because they can come after both your business assets and your personal assets.
Knowledge is power when it is the correct knowledge.
A lot of the free information that is available online about search engine optimization is outdated as is some of the inexpensive and a few of the more expensive products that are being sold by Internet marketers.
This e-commerce business owner is also unaware that his online reputation was the first thing most people look for when they are referred to his business.
Build your reputation, proudly market that reputation and get found everywhere so customers can come back to a quality website that’s on a quality hosting platform to conduct their business with you.
