One of the mistakes many make in Network Marketing is the “Failure to understand the Mathematics of Geometric Growth within a network marketing down line.”

I have put together an example of how Geometric Growth works for real in Network Marketing and it shows you what is called The Power of One.

Picture this: A person called A signs up with XYZ Company and decides to work his/her business for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. That means s/he is working his business for at least 40 hours a month.

Since A is new to the business, it is perfectly normal that s/he needs to spend initial time studying the company and the products carefully and to tap into the team spirit of the group. In my example below I assume this person does nothing else his/her first month, that is … s/he spends 40 hours studying and preparing for the business.

The second month A goes for it. S/He spends at least 75% of the time s/he has to personally contact his/her leads and prospects and invites them to the company presentations. Yes, s/he will get no’s and rejections. S/He will dial some bad numbers. S/He will meet some answering machines. But, since s/he has taken time to understand what geometric growth is, s/he won’t quit until s/he finds ONE person that is willing to join him/her in business.

S/He knows that finding that person is like flipping over a deck of cards one card at a time. You never know when the Ace of Spades turns up and you might have to flip the cards 52 times to find it. On the other hand, A knows for sure that if s/he flips all the 52 cards in the deck s/he will eventually find the Ace of Spades s/he was looking for. Let’s call him B.

The third month A again finds one person, C, and B does the same and finds his/her first, D.

The fourth month and every month after that everyone does the same and duplicates by one. My calculations below show the geometric growth if this would happen.

Before you read my example and study it I would like you to consider this:

If you are building your business and you use … say … 30 hours per month to contact your leads and prospects personally, inviting them to see your company presentations, following up with them and asking for their decision, will you find at least ONE person to join you per month? The answer is definitely a big YES (ask anyone who has sponsored 3 – 5 people into their business if you haven’t yourself). At the same time you should know that if someone “says” s/he is working his business for 30 hours a month but isn’t able to find one person to join him in that time, s/he is definitely not doing the right things. S/He is NOT contacting his/her leads and prospects personally and constantly, following up with them and asking for their decision. S/he is either not flipping the deck of cards one by one or s/he stops flipping them before the Ace of Spades turns up.

Consider this: Are you willing to use the time you have for your business to call your leads and prospects each month until you find one person that joins you? If your answer is “yes” that is exactly what you will duplicate. If your answer is “no” that is exactly what you will duplicate.

Would you like the people in your down line to work each month until they find one person to join them? Well then that is exactly what you have to do yourself.

Period 1:

Level 1 = 0
Level 2 = 0
Level 3 = 0
Level 4 = 0

Total people on your first level = 0
Total people in your group = 0

I sign up with XYZ Company and I use 2 hours a day, 5 days a week for my business. That means I have 40 hours a month for my business. The first 40 hours I study my business. I study every aspect carefully, including all trainings. I prepare and set up my business, my time schedule, my budget and I tap into the spirit of the group and start learning from them.

Period 2:

Level 1 = 1
Level 2 = 0
Level 3 = 0
Level 4 = 0

Total people on your first level = 1
Total people in your group = 1

In my second month I use 30 hours of the 40 I have to call my leads and prospects and invite them to the company presentations. I make it a goal of mine to successfully invite at least 1-2 new persons a day to see the company presentations and that means I successfully invite at least 20-40 persons a month. I carefully plan my follow up to call those I invite the day after they attend the company presentations and ask for their decision. The 10 hours I have left of the 40 I use to go to training’s, read the e-mails from the group, study the business and the training’s more carefully and, most importantly, I show and teach my first sign up to do the same.

Period 3:

Level 1 = 2
Level 2 = 1
Level 3 = 0
Level 4 = 0

Total people on your first level = 2
Total people in your group = 3

In my third month I again use 30 hours of the 40 I have to call my leads and prospects and invite them to the company presentations. I make it a goal of mine to successfully invite at least 1-2 new persons a day to see the company presentations and that means I successfully invite at least 20-40 persons a month. I carefully plan my follow up to call those I invited the day after they attend the company presentations and ask for their decision. The 10 hours I have left of the 40 I use to go to training’s, read the e-mails from the group, study the business and the training’s more carefully and, most importantly, I show and teach my second sign up to do the same.

Period 4:

Level 1 = 3
Level 2 = 3
Level 3 = 1
Level 4 = 0

Total people on your first level = 3
Total people in your group = 7

In my fourth month, I do exactly the same as in the past two months. I use at least 75% of my time to successfully invite 1-2 new persons to attend the company presentations each day and follow up with those that attended it the previous day, asking for their decision. So far, I have spent 160 hours to work my business. I have invested both time and money in my business with a small return. WHAT? That looks like a really bad investment of both time and money … no wonder people give up and quit! But not me … because … I have studied and I understand the geometric growth of this business – and I show and teach my down line to do the same.

Period 5:

Level 1 = 4
Level 2 = 6
Level 3 = 4
Level 4 = 1

Total people on your first level = 4
Total people in your group = 15

What I do and how I do it is easily duplicable. I simply use at least 75% of my time to call and successfully invite 1-2 new people each day to attend the company presentations and follow up with those that have attended it and ask for their decision. I have now been practicing this for 4 months and I can tell you that the easiest part of this business is calling up my leads and prospects and inviting them to attend the company presentations. When I started my business I was afraid of doing this for several reasons and I thought it was the most difficult part. But let me tell you, it isn’t. You just have to practice it and understand that with every “no” and rejection you get you are one step closer to the “yes”, which means that the “no’s” and the rejections are actually your friends and not your enemies.

Period 6:

Level 1 = 5
Level 2 = 10
Level 3 = 10
Level 4 = 5
Level 5 = 1

Total people on your first level = 5
Total people in your group = 31

Ok, let’s review my progress. I have spent 40 hours times 6 months = 240 hours to work my business. I have invested much time and money without a great return. No wonder people that don’t understand the geometric growth in Network Marketing give up and quit (and tell others they have been “burned”). This looks like a total waste of time and money if you don’t see a little bit further.

Period 7:

Level 1 = 6
Level 2 = 15
Level 3 = 20
Level 4 = 15
Level 5 = 6
Level 6 = 1

Total people on your first level = 6
Total people in your group = 63

How about that! Because I didn’t give up and I understood and followed the pattern of the Power of One and taught my down line to understand it as well and do the same, month number 7 gives me more money than all the previous ones combined.

Period 8:

Level 1 = 7
Level 2 = 21
Level 3 = 35
Level 4 = 35
Level 5 = 21
Level 6 = 7
Level 7 = 1

Total people on your first 1 level = 7
Total people in your group = 121

Hello!!!! That’s what we call breaking even with a style!

Period 9:

Level 1 = 8
Level 2 = 28
Level 3 = 56
Level 4 = 70
Level 5 = 56
Level 6 = 28
Level 7 = 8
Level 8 = 1

Total people on your first level = 8
Total people in your group = 255

Now things are really starting to pick up!

Period 10:

Level 1 = 9
Level 2 = 36
Level 3 = 84
Level 4 = 126
Level 5 = 126
Level 6 = 84
Level 7 = 36
Level 8 = 9
Level 9 = 1

Total people on your first level = 9
Total people in your group = 511

Look at these numbers. By following and understanding the Power of One-rule, the geometric growth of Network Marketing, I have built myself a residual income by sponsoring only ONE person each month and teaching my down line to do the same.

Period 11:

Level 1 = 10
Level 2 = 45
Level 3 = 120
Level 4 = 210
Level 5 = 252
Level 6 = 210
Level 7 = 120
Level 8 = 45
Level 9 = 10
Level 10 = 1

Total people on your first levels = 10
Total people in your group = 1,023

What do I do to earn residual income this month? Answer: Exactly the same thing I did in my second month: I use 75% of my time to call prospects and leads and invite them to see the company presentations. I then follow up with them and ask for their decision and I don’t give up until I find at least one that is willing to join me and I teach him/her how to duplicate what I do.

Period 12:

Level 1 = 11
Level 2 = 55
Level 3 = 165
Level 4 = 330
Level 5 = 462
Level 6 = 462
Level 7 = 330
Level 8 = 165
Level 9 = 55
Level 10 = 11
Level 11 = 1

Total people on your first level = 11
Total people in your group = 2,047

What do I do to earn a residual income this month? Answer: Exactly the same thing I did in my second month: I use 75% of my time to call prospects and leads and invite them to see the company presentations. I then follow up with them and ask for their decision. With this activity I find 1 person a month to sponsor into my business and I teach him how to duplicate what I do.

Period 13:

Level 1 = 12
Level 2 = 66
Level 3 = 220
Level 4 = 495
Level 5 = 792
Level 6 = 924
Level 7 = 792
Level 8 = 495
Level 9 = 220
Level 10 = 66
Level 11 = 12
Level 12 = 1

Total people on your first level = 12
Total people in your group = 4,095

What do I do to earn a residual income this month? Answer: Exactly the same thing I did in my second month: I use 75% of my time to call prospects and leads and invite them to see the company presentations. I then follow up with them and ask for their decision and I don’t give up until I find at least one that is willing to join me and I teach him/her how to duplicate what I do.

I am not going to go further with these calculations, you can do that. Of course you understand that all of this is hypothetical, it never builds exactly like this. But now that you have the model try calculating this using your own numbers and make a plan.

For example:

Using the Power of One-rule, what would happen if 30% of the people that came into your group would never do anything and quit?

What would happen if 60% of the people in your group would do nothing and quit?

What would happen if you sponsored 3 people each month and 50% of the people in your group would sponsor 1 each month, 20% would sponsor 2 each month and 30% would do nothing and quit?

Put up an example that fits your beliefs and your own actions and calculate how long it would take you to build the residual income you want.

The trick is to use the time you have to work your business to find ONE person to join you each month. Not 5, 10 or 20 – just ONE. Understand the value of THE POWER OF ONE and your business will bloom.

Being successful in Network Marketing is a lot about educating you in what it is that creates success in Network Marketing. Do that and keep on doing it for as long as it takes. Put into action what you learn and you will succeed.

Note: This article has been around for quite some time and associated with many different businesses. I don’t know who originated it but I thank them. EVERY Network Marketer needs to make this a document they study and then live by.
